The township was set off from Medford, Southampton and Eastampton in 1860, and Hainesport split away from it in 1924. Two older crossroads came first: Eayrestown, where the Eayres family ran a sawmill and gristmill in the late 1600s, and Fostertown, settled by William Foster in 1735. Boats built in Lumberton carried lumber and cordwood down the creek to the Delaware for more than a century.
Route 38 runs along the northern edge past Hainesport, Route 541 connects the township with Mount Holly and Medford, and the fields to the south and east are still farmed. About 12,800 people live in the township.
