Where Ringo's Tavern stood, and why that road still matters
Ringoes grew up around the tavern the Ringo family kept on the Old York Road from the 1730s, and it is counted as the oldest settlement in Hunterdon County. In January 1775 local men met at that tavern to form a committee of correspondence chaired by John Hart, who signed the Declaration of Independence the next year. The village core is on the National Register as the Ringoes Historic District, with the Amwell Academy and the Landis House still standing along the old road.
The township itself dates to April 6, 1846, when the Legislature split the original Amwell Township into East and West. Two landscapes share it. The northern half is the Amwell Valley, open fields the township has fought to keep in farming through preservation. The southern half rises onto the Sourland Mountain, where Charles and Anne Lindbergh built Highfields in 1931. Just under 4,000 people live here, and US 202, Route 31 and Route 179 all come together at Ringoes.
