A date, a mint mark or a grade can put a coin above its metal content, so every coin is checked against collector demand first and you are offered the higher of the two figures. How is the number worked out, and can I check it first?
Three inputs decide a melt figure and nothing else moves it: how many grams you have, what share of that is actually gold, and what the live market is doing at that minute. That is why an honest buyer can show you the whole calculation on the counter and a dishonest one changes the subject.
Purity is the lever, and it matters far more than how heavy a piece feels in the hand. A 14K item is 58.5 percent gold while a 22K item is 91.7 percent, so two chains of identical weight can be worth very different amounts. It is also the reason karats are separated and weighed one group at a time, and why letting anyone weigh a mixed pile in a single go costs you money.

Worked example. Say you bring a 14K chain that weighs 21 grams.
- Pure gold content: 21 grams × 0.585 = 12.285 grams of gold.
- Convert to troy ounces: 12.285 ÷ 31.1035 = 0.3950 troy ounces.
- Multiply by the market: 0.3950 × $S = the chain's melt value at that moment.
Swap the decimal for any other karat from the table. Note what the same 21 grams gives at 10K: 21 × 0.417 is 8.76 grams of gold, or 0.2816 troy ounces, well under three quarters of the 14K figure for identical weight on the scale.
Two units matter and both get misused. One troy ounce is 31.1035 grams, not the 28.35 grams of a kitchen ounce, and a pennyweight is about 1.555 grams. What do I bring so nothing slows the payment down?
Only one thing can actually stop you being paid today, and it is the ID.
