West Amwell and East Amwell were created together on April 6, 1846, when the Legislature divided the old Amwell Township. Three years later the river settlement once known as Coryell's Ferry, by then called Lambertville, broke away to incorporate on its own. That is why the township today is a ring of hills and farms around a small city it used to include.
Long before either split, a Lenape path ran from the river through Mount Airy toward Ringoes, and colonists widened it into the Old York Road between Philadelphia and New York. Mount Airy was a regular stage stop by the 1760s. The old road through the township is Route 179 now, while US 202 crosses the Delaware on its toll bridge and cuts across the township on a newer line. Part of the township lies within the Pleasant Valley Historic District, a working farm landscape listed on the National Register in 1991.
