What is a 1 oz American Gold Eagle?

The 1 oz Gold Eagle is the largest of the four American Gold Eagle sizes the US Mint has struck since 1986: 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz. It is legal tender with a 50 dollar face value, but nobody sells one at face; its value comes from the gold inside it.

  • 22 karat gold. The coin is 91.67 percent gold. The rest is silver and copper, which makes it harder and more scratch resistant than pure 24 karat gold.
  • One troy ounce of gold. Because the alloy adds weight, the whole coin weighs more than an ounce, about 33.93 grams, so that the gold inside comes to exactly one troy ounce.
  • Size. About 32.7 mm across and 2.87 mm thick, with a reeded edge.
  • Bullion or collector. Most 1 oz Eagles are bullion strikes. The Mint also makes proof and burnished versions for collectors, often marked W for the West Point Mint.

How much is a 1 oz Gold Eagle worth today?

A 1 oz Gold Eagle is worth at least its gold: one troy ounce at the live gold spot price, which is $4,160.95 per ounce as this page loads and moves all day, so no fixed figure is printed here. A common date bullion Eagle trades close to that number, because every dealer knows exactly how much gold it holds.

Proofs, burnished coins, low mintage years and coins graded by a major grading service can be worth more than the gold. That is why we identify the coin and check for a collector premium before we quote the gold, and you get whichever number is higher. Every figure is written down and explained in front of you.

Before you come in: do not clean the coin, keep a proof in its original Mint box and capsule with the certificate, and leave a graded coin in its holder.

1 oz Gold Eagle questions, answered

Is a 1 oz American Gold Eagle pure gold?

No. It is 22 karat, 91.67 percent gold, alloyed with silver and copper for durability. The coin is made slightly heavier than an ounce so that it still contains one full troy ounce of gold.

How much gold is in a 1 oz Gold Eagle?

Exactly one troy ounce of gold. The whole coin weighs about 33.93 grams because of the silver and copper in the alloy, but the gold content is one troy ounce, so its gold value is one ounce at the live spot price.

What is the face value of a 1 oz Gold Eagle?

50 dollars. The face value is a legal tender formality; the coin is bought and sold on its gold content and any collector premium, never at face.

Do you buy 1 oz Gold Eagles at every store?

Yes. All 8 of our Central New Jersey stores buy American Gold Eagles in every size, with a free evaluation, no appointment and same-day cash. Our Millstone store also sells them; call ahead for stock.
