What is each golden eagle coin worth right now?
Gold Eagles are struck in four sizes, all 22-karat (91.67 percent gold, alloyed with silver and copper for durability), and each contains its full stated weight of pure gold:
| Size | Pure gold content | Face value | Gold value right now |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 oz Gold Eagle | 1.0000 troy oz | $50 | β |
| 1/2 oz Gold Eagle | 0.5000 troy oz | $25 | β |
| 1/4 oz Gold Eagle | 0.2500 troy oz | $10 | β |
| 1/10 oz Gold Eagle | 0.1000 troy oz | $5 | β |
The face value is symbolic; nobody spends a $50 coin carrying an ounce of gold. Market value is the table above plus a premium that reflects the Eagle's instant recognizability, and proof and burnished collector versions can bring meaningfully more than bullion strikes.
The 1/10 oz gold coin: how the smallest ounce fraction is priced
The 1/10 ounce Gold Eagle is the size sellers ask about most, because it is the one gifted and inherited most often. It prices the same way as its big brothers: one tenth of the live gold price, plus a premium that runs proportionally higher than on a full ounce because small coins cost the Mint more per ounce to strike. The five dollar face value stamped on it is symbolic; the gold sets the number.
How does selling American Gold Eagle coins work?
Faster than any other gold sale, because the coin does the proving. An Eagle's weight and purity are guaranteed by the US Mint, so the counter verifies authenticity (weight, dimensions, and XRF in front of you), checks whether yours is a collector version worth more than bullion, and prices it from the same live feed this page shows. Most Eagle sales are done in ten minutes with same-day cash.
Bring tubes, capsules and boxes as they are, and leave graded examples in their PCGS or NGC holders: a certified high-grade or proof Eagle is priced on the certification, not cracked out of it. Fractional Eagles sell on exactly the same basis, and full tubes are welcome.
Watch the market before you come in on the live gold price page, and if you also hold Buffalos, Maple Leafs, Krugerrands or bars, one visit covers all of it.
One Eagle or a full tube: verified in front of you, priced from the live market, paid the same day.

Are American Gold Eagle coins pure gold?
They contain their full stated weight of pure gold, but the coin itself is 22 karat: 91.67 percent gold hardened with silver and copper. A 1 oz Eagle weighs about 1.09 ounces total so that a full troy ounce of it is gold. The Gold Buffalo is the Mint's .9999 fine alternative.
What is a golden eagle coin worth today?
The live gold value in the table above plus a premium for the coin's recognition, typically a small percentage for common-date bullion strikes and more for proofs and low-mintage collector issues. The gold half of that math updates on this page all day.
Should I sell my Gold Eagles by mail or in person?
In person, for the same reason you bought government-minted coins: verification you can watch. At a counter the coin never leaves your sight, authentication happens in front of you, and cash is paid the same visit instead of after a mail-in wait.
Do older Gold Eagle dates matter?
Mostly for proofs and certain low-mintage years, which is exactly what the collector check catches before any bullion offer. Common-date bullion Eagles from any year trade on their gold, which never expires or wears out of them.
