Winfield Park: one planned neighborhood that became a township
The federal government put up the Winfield Park Mutual Ownership Defense Housing Project in 1941 for families working the Kearny shipyards during the Second World War. It was organised as a mutual from the start, and it still is: the land belongs to the community's mutual housing corporation, and residents hold a share in it rather than a deed to a lot. About 1,400 people live here, which makes Winfield the smallest municipality in Union County.
Clark sits on one side and Linden on the other, and Rahway River Park runs along the edge of town. Winfield School teaches kindergarten through eighth grade, and older students go on to Arthur L. Johnson High School in Clark. Mail is addressed to Linden 07036, which is why a phone search for gold buyers from a Winfield street usually shows Linden results first.
Wedding bands, charm bracelets and a few silver dollars
When one family keeps the same home for a long time, the jewelry collects in layers: wedding bands from more than one generation, a religious medal on a thin chain, a charm bracelet that gained a charm every birthday, a man's ring and a wristwatch that nobody wears, and now and then a silver dollar someone put away years ago. Most of it is everyday 10K and 14K gold, and very little of it was ever bought as an investment.
That kind of box is exactly where a single blended rate costs the seller. 10K gold is 41.7 percent pure and 14K is 58.5 percent, so the two are never weighed together. A charm bracelet can carry charms of more than one karat plus one or two plated ones, so each charm is read on its own by the XRF analyzer. Silver dollars and older coins are checked for collector value before anyone talks about metal. The gold jewelry page and the coin page go through each step.
What the Middlesex counter is like, from someone who sold there
“I came to the cash for gold trading post and Ed was very honest and easy going! I am very happy with this location. I highly recommend this trading post and will definitely be coming back in the future!”
Michael McNamara, five-star Google review of Cash 4 Gold Trading Post in Middlesex
Three habits that help a Winfield seller
Empty the small boxes too. The broken chains, single earrings and bent rings at the bottom of a dresser drawer are gold like everything else, and a snapped clasp does not change the karat. Leave a charm bracelet in one piece so each charm can be read where it hangs. And carry coins in whatever holder or sleeve they came in; a coin scrubbed at the kitchen sink can lose collector value it had the day before.
Sorting out a parent's home rather than one drawer? The estate buyers service can look at a whole collection, and the New Jersey estate jewelry guide covers probate and paperwork.
Route 28 west, straight to Bound Brook Road
Pick up Route 28 in Cranford heading west. It carries you through Garwood, Westfield, Fanwood and the Plainfields to Dunellen, and once you reach Middlesex the same road is called Bound Brook Road; the store is at number 748. The Parkway and I-287 are the highway alternative. Either way, allow about half an hour, more when Westfield traffic is heavy.
Who else along the Rahway River makes this trip?
Winfield Park itself, the Clark and Linden streets on either side of it, and the towns strung along Route 28 on the way west: Cranford, Garwood and Westfield. Roselle and Kenilworth are a few minutes further out.
What do Winfield sellers bring to Middlesex?
Mostly everyday gold and family pieces, with the odd coin. Open a category to see how each one is judged.
What happens at the Middlesex counter
Put the whole lot down and show your ID. Coins are set aside first so nobody melts a collectible by mistake. Bands, chains and charms are sorted by karat, silver is split from plate, and any watch or stone gets its own look. Everything is read and weighed in view and priced at that day's live market, with a separate number for anything worth more than its metal. Take the cash, or pack it all back up at no charge.

How do I get from Winfield to the Middlesex store?
Take Route 28 west from Cranford through Westfield and the Plainfields; in Middlesex it becomes Bound Brook Road, and the store is at 748 Bound Brook Rd. The Parkway and I-287 also work. Plan on about half an hour. Phone (732) 629-7600.
Is Winfield part of Linden?
No. Winfield is its own township with its own government and school, even though its mail uses Linden's 07036 ZIP code. It sits between Linden and Clark.
Can I come on a Saturday?
Yes. The Middlesex store is open Saturday from 10 to 4, weekdays from 10 to 6, and closed Sunday. No appointment; bring a government photo ID.
Will a charm bracelet with mixed charms be priced fairly?
Yes. Each charm is read separately on the XRF analyzer, so a 14K charm is paid as 14K even if the bracelet it hangs on is 10K, and any plated charm is simply set aside.
Do you buy old silver dollars and coins?
Yes. Coins are checked for date, mint mark and condition before metal value is discussed, so a collectible coin is never priced as scrap silver.
Do you buy from Clark, Cranford and Linden too?
Yes. Sellers from Winfield's neighbors, and from Garwood, Westfield, Roselle and Kenilworth, make the same drive to Middlesex.
