The borough was incorporated in 1913 from parts of Berkeley and Dover townships, a few decades after a railroad bridge across Barnegat Bay first brought day-trippers to this part of the peninsula. Casino Pier opened in 1932, the same year the town installed a Dentzel and Looff carousel built around 1910, which still turns in its own pavilion. Hurricane Sandy put the pier's Jet Star roller coaster into the ocean in October 2012, and less than a year later, in September 2013, a fire that started in Seaside Park burned north along the boardwalk into Seaside Heights. The Hydrus coaster opened on the rebuilt pier in 2017.
Getting on and off the island means Route 37: the Thomas A. Mathis and J. Stanley Tunney bridges carry traffic between Toms River and the peninsula, with Pelican Island in the middle. Inside the town, Route 35 runs north and south as the Boulevard, Ocean Terrace fronts the boardwalk, and the bay side faces Barnegat Bay. Ortley Beach is the neighbour to the north and Seaside Park to the south.
