Oceanport broke away from Eatontown in 1920 and has stayed small, a little over six thousand people on about four square miles of peninsula in the Shrewsbury River. Port-au-Peck, reached by Port-au-Peck Avenue, is lined with docks and older waterfront houses. Branchport Avenue runs out toward Long Branch, and Oceanport Avenue carries summer traffic to Monmouth Park, where the Haskell draws the biggest crowd of the season.
The other landmark is the one that closed. Fort Monmouth began on racetrack land leased to the Army in 1917 and grew into the Signal Corps' home for most of the century, until it shut in 2011. Many Oceanport households had someone who worked or served there, and the redevelopment of the fort land is still reshaping that side of the borough.
