A campus town with a presidential mansion at its centre
West Long Branch split from Eatontown Township and became a borough in 1908. Its best known building is Wilson Hall, the 130-room mansion that Hubert and Maysie Parson built in the late 1920s on the Shadow Lawn estate after the earlier house burned. The first Shadow Lawn had served as Woodrow Wilson's summer White House during the 1916 campaign. The replacement, designed by Horace Trumbauer with Julian Abele, is now the administrative heart of Monmouth University, and film fans know it as the Warbucks mansion in the 1982 movie Annie.
Away from the campus the borough is under three square miles of houses, with the Norwood Park section toward the Long Branch line and quieter streets running to the Eatontown and Oceanport borders. Route 36 and Cedar Avenue, the university's own address, carry most of the traffic.
