The Green, Jockey Hollow and a town that kept its history
Washington brought the Continental Army to Morristown for the winter of 1777, and again for the hard winter of 1779 to 1780, when thousands of soldiers built log huts at Jockey Hollow while he kept headquarters in the Ford Mansion. Those sites, with Fort Nonsense on the hill above downtown, became Morristown National Historical Park in 1933, the first national historical park in the country.
The town kept adding chapters. At the Speedwell Ironworks in the 1830s, Samuel Morse and Alfred Vail demonstrated the electromagnetic telegraph. The Seeing Eye, the oldest guide dog school in the United States, has trained dogs in Morristown for decades. Today the Green is ringed by shops and offices, and the Mayo Performing Arts Center draws crowds on South Street.
Why a Morristown diamond ring gets two separate numbers
Much of what comes to us from Morristown is fine jewelry rather than scrap: a solitaire from an engagement that ended, a diamond band, a pair of studs, a platinum setting from an older ring. The mistake a quick buyer makes is to weigh the ring and pay for metal only, as if the stone were not there.
We do the opposite. The diamond is examined loose or in the mount under magnification for carat weight, cut, color and clarity, and a GIA or AGS report, if you have one, is read and checked against the stone. The setting is then tested on its own. Platinum is usually stamped PLAT or 950 and reads as about 95 percent pure; white gold is usually 14K or 18K under its rhodium plating. Each part gets its own number, so you know exactly what the stone is worth and what the metal is worth. The diamond buying page and the engagement ring guide explain more.

Executors, estates and watches from Morristown homes
As the county seat, Morristown is where many Morris County estates are settled, and executors often need a clear written figure for jewelry before anything is divided or sold. We give an itemized number, piece by piece, so it can be shown to the family or the attorney handling the estate.
Watches deserve their own look. A solid gold dress watch is valued for its case and bracelet, and a well-known Swiss make can be worth well above its metal, so we check the brand, movement and condition before quoting. Bring any box and papers you have. For a larger household, the estate buyers service can come to the house, and the watch buying page covers what raises a watch above melt.

What Morristown sellers bring down I-287
Diamonds and platinum more than most towns, plus gold, watches and estate pieces. Open a category to see how it is judged.
A Morristown sale, step by step
Show your ID and set the pieces down. Stones are looked at under magnification while you watch, metal is read by XRF and weighed on a certified scale, and watches are checked for make and condition. Gold and platinum are priced at that day's live market, and every diamond and watch is quoted on its own line. Accept and you leave with cash the same day; decline and everything goes back in your pocket.

How do I get from Morristown to the Middlesex store?
Take I-287 south from Morristown to the Route 28 exit toward Bound Brook, then Route 28 east into Middlesex to 748 Bound Brook Rd. It is about 25 to 30 minutes outside rush hour. Phone (732) 629-7600.
Will a Morristown engagement ring be valued for the diamond, not just the gold?
Yes. The diamond is graded for carat, cut, color and clarity under magnification and the setting is tested separately, so you get one number for the stone and one for the metal.
How can I tell platinum from white gold in a Morristown ring?
Look inside the band: platinum is usually stamped PLAT, PT or 950, and white gold 14K or 18K. We confirm it with the XRF analyzer in front of you, since rhodium plating makes the two look alike.
Can Morristown executors get an itemized figure for estate jewelry?
Yes. Every piece is tested and valued individually and the figure is itemized, so it can be shared with the family or the estate attorney before anything is sold.
Do you buy from Madison, Whippany and Morris Township as well as Morristown?
Yes. Sellers from Morris Township and Convent Station, Madison, Whippany and Hanover Township use the same I-287 route south to Middlesex.
What days can Morristown sellers visit the Middlesex store?
Monday through Friday from 10 to 6 and Saturday from 10 to 4; closed Sunday. No appointment is needed, just a valid government photo ID.
