Lacey Township was set off in 1871 and named for General John Lacey of the Revolutionary War. Forked River, its largest village, takes its name from the North, Middle and South Branches that fork through town on their way to Barnegat Bay, and much of the east side is lagoon homes with a boat tied up out back. West of the Parkway the land turns to Pine Barrens, where the low rise of the Forked River Mountains sits in the woods.
For nearly fifty years the Oyster Creek nuclear plant in Lacey was one of the area's big employers, from 1969 until it shut down in 2018.
