West Creek, Dock Road and the Westecunk
Most of Eagleswood lives within a mile or two of Route 9. West Creek, the village that gives the township its post office, grew up where the road crosses Westecunk Creek, and Dock Road runs east from it through open marsh toward the bay, where clammers and duck hunters have put in for generations. Much of that marsh now belongs to the Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge. To the west the township turns to pine woods around the Stafford Forge Wildlife Management Area, where a bog-iron forge once worked the streams in the early 1800s.
It is the least crowded municipality in Ocean County. The 2020 census counted 1,722 residents across about 16 square miles, the most the township has ever recorded. Children start at the township school and go on to Pinelands Regional, and many families have held the same land along the creek for generations.
