A church green, a six-hundred-year oak and a general taken prisoner
The middle of Basking Ridge is the green in front of the Presbyterian church on Oak Street. A white oak stood in that churchyard for roughly six centuries and was so much a part of the village that its loss in 2017 made the regional news. In December 1776, British cavalry rode into the edge of the same village and captured General Charles Lee at a tavern where he had spent the night, one of the stranger episodes of the Revolution.
About 27,800 people live in the township now. The older houses cluster near the village and along Finley Avenue, larger lots spread toward Liberty Corner and Lyons, and whole neighborhoods were built once I-287 and I-78 turned the township into a corporate address; Verizon's headquarters campus is here. To the northeast the roads end at Lord Stirling Park and the Great Swamp, and the Gladstone Branch trains stop at both Basking Ridge and Lyons.
Ridge High class rings, the stone from before the upgrade, and a grandparent's coin album
Township teenagers graduate from Ridge High School, and a Ridge class ring is one of the most common things set on our counter by a Basking Ridge seller. Most are 10K, which is 41.7 percent gold, a few are 14K at 58.5 percent, and each one is read on its own. Just as common is a diamond that has been replaced: a milestone anniversary brings a bigger stone, and the original solitaire sits in a drawer. That stone is judged under magnification for its cut, color, clarity and carat, and the old band is read for karat separately, often 14K or 18K at 75 percent. The engagement ring page covers how that works.
Long corporate careers leave their own pile: a gold watch from a retirement dinner, a tie bar, cufflinks. Then there is the coin album a grandparent filled one date at a time. Albums are gone through coin by coin for dates and mint marks before anything is priced as metal, which the coin buying page explains, and sterling at 92.5 percent is weighed apart from plate on the silver buying page.
A repeat seller on how the counter works
“I have sold jewelry and coins multiple times and always received a fair price. Also staff is always up front with the pricing so you can decide whether you want to sell without any pressure. Always a good experience.”

Three things to set aside before you leave the house
First, the ring box: if a stone was upgraded, bring the original with any GIA report or the old appraisal, and bring the band even if it is bent. Second, the coins: leave them in the album pages or flips, uncleaned, because a polished coin loses its collector value and cannot get it back. Third, everything that might be gold and might not be. Costume and real pieces often end up in the same tray after decades, and the XRF analyzer sorts them in seconds, backed by an acid test.

Class rings, replaced diamonds and coin albums lead. Tap a category to see how it is judged.
What the visit looks like for a Bernards seller
Hand over your ID and set things out by category. Gold is read by XRF piece by piece, diamonds come out of their settings only if you agree, and coins get a date and mint-mark check before any metal value is named. Everything is weighed on a certified scale facing you and priced at that day's live market. Say yes and you are paid on the spot; say no and it all goes back in your bag at no charge.

How long is the drive from Basking Ridge to the Middlesex store?
About 20 minutes and 12 miles. Take I-287 South into Bridgewater, exit onto Route 28 East, and follow it through Bound Brook to the store at 748 Bound Brook Rd, Middlesex. Phone (732) 629-7600.
Is Basking Ridge a separate town from Bernards Township?
No. Basking Ridge is the largest village and the main mailing name inside Bernards Township, in Somerset County. Liberty Corner and Lyons are sections of the same township, which has one municipal government.
I upgraded my engagement ring. Will you buy the original diamond?
Yes, loose or still set. The stone is examined under magnification for cut, color, clarity and carat, and the band is read for karat by XRF, so each is valued on its own. A GIA or AGS report helps but is not required.
Is a Ridge High School class ring real gold?
Most are 10K or 14K gold, though some class rings are made in a gold-colored alloy with no gold at all. The XRF analyzer tells them apart in seconds, backed by an acid test, and a synthetic stone does not stop the gold from being bought.
What are the Middlesex store hours?
Middlesex is open Monday through Friday from 10 to 6 and Saturday from 10 to 4, and closed Sunday. No appointment is needed; bring a valid government photo ID, which New Jersey requires for every precious-metals sale.
Do you buy from Bernardsville, Far Hills and Warren too?
Yes. Sellers from Bernardsville, Far Hills, Bedminster, Warren and Long Hill Township come to the same Middlesex counter by the same I-287 route.
