Middlesex is the only one of our counters open until four on Saturday

Our Bound Brook Road store runs Saturday from 10am to 4pm. That is six hours. Every other Cash 4 Gold Trading Post location that opens on a Saturday either shuts at three or does not unlock until eleven, which leaves five, and two of the eight do not open on Saturday at all. Middlesex has the longest weekend window we run anywhere.

That sounds like a small difference until you are the one holding the box. If you work Monday to Friday, our weekday hours of 10am to 6pm sit almost entirely inside your working day. Saturday is the only day you can walk in without asking anybody for time off, and this is the counter where that Saturday is longest.

We are stating it plainly because people plan around opening hours and then get caught out by them. A seller who leaves the house at half past two on a Saturday has time here. At most of our other stores, that same seller arrives to a locked door.

What a Saturday visit gives you that a weekday one does not

The work at the counter is identical on either day. Same testing equipment, same certified scale, same buyers, same walk through how a number was arrived at. Nothing about the day of the week changes what your gold is worth or how carefully it gets checked.

What changes is the shape of your day around it. A weekday visit, for most people, is carved out of a lunch break or the half hour between school pick-up and dinner, and that clock does not care whether the box you brought is small or enormous. On a Saturday you are not borrowing the time from anywhere else. You can stand there while every piece is read, ask what a mark means, and change your mind halfway through about what you are actually selling.

We are not going to tell you the store is quiet at a particular hour, because we do not keep that kind of count and we are not going to guess at it in order to fill a paragraph. What we can tell you is the size of the window, and here the window is bigger.

What can still be done properly between three and four

A late Saturday arrival is welcome, and it is worth being honest about what fits inside it. A handful of rings, a chain or two, a broken bracelet, a small stack of coins. That is a straightforward visit. Each piece is tested and weighed, you see the figures as they come up, and you leave with cash or with everything you walked in carrying. That is comfortably done in the last hour.

What does not fit is a full estate lot. A jewellery box that has not been emptied since the nineties, a collection sitting in albums, a canteen of flatware where the sterling has to be picked out from the plate. That is genuine sorting work, and sorting is the part where haste costs you money. Hurrying it to beat a closing time is precisely how something good ends up lumped in with the scrap.

So if you turn up at half past three with a lot that size, we will make a start, we will tell you honestly how far we expect to get, and you can decide whether to finish it now or bring the whole thing back on a morning. Either way nothing stays here overnight. We buy outright and pay the same day, so your property is never sitting on our side of the counter while you wait on something.

Why a big lot belongs on a Saturday morning

The longer window earns its keep the moment there is volume. Going through a mixed lot is not one job, it is several small ones stacked on top of each other. Karat-marked jewellery has to come away from the plated and the costume. What survives that gets grouped by karat before anything goes on the scale, because 10K is 41.7 percent gold, 14K is 58.5, 18K is 75 and 22K is 91.7, and weighing them as one pile would flatten every one of those differences.

Coins take their own pass. Pre-1965 US dimes, quarters and half dollars are 90 percent silver and get set aside from the later ones that are not. Sterling, at 92.5 percent, comes out from anything merely plated. And then there is the separate question of whether a particular coin or a signed piece is worth more than the metal inside it, which is a conversation rather than a measurement.

None of that is slow work exactly, but it accumulates, and it goes better when nobody in the room is watching a clock. Six hours on a Saturday is enough room to bring the entire box, including the parts you have already written off in your head, and find out at the counter instead of deciding at your kitchen table.

Of our eight New Jersey stores, the Middlesex counter is the northernmost and the westernmost. It faces the Somerset side. If you have been searching from Bridgewater, Somerville, Manville or Raritan and quietly assumed everything we run is down towards the shore, this address is very likely nearer to you than you think.

Route 28 runs to the door and Interstate 287 keeps the store in reach from further out. There is parking directly in front, which matters more than it sounds when you are carrying something you would rather not put down in a car park and repack.

The distance question and the opening-hours question usually get answered separately, and they really ought to be answered together. The nearest counter is not much use if it is shut at the only time you can get there. For somebody on the Somerset side with a Monday-to-Friday job, this store tends to win both at once.

The extra hour is this store's alone, so check before you drive to another

The one way this page could cost you something is if you took the Saturday hours here and assumed they ran across the whole company. They do not. Every one of our stores opens Monday to Friday from 10am to 6pm, and every one is closed on Sunday, but Saturday is where they part company, and the spread is wide enough to ruin a trip.

Aberdeen and Farmingdale open at 11am on Saturday and close at 4pm. East Brunswick, Manalapan and Millstone run 10am to 3pm. Brick and New Brunswick do not open on Saturday at all. Middlesex, at 10am to 4pm, is the only counter that gives you both the early start and the late finish.

Which means a plan that works here does not travel. Half past three on a Saturday is an ordinary arrival at Bound Brook Road and a wasted journey at any of the others. How to spend a Saturday morning at the Middlesex counter

No appointment is needed and there is no booking system to work around. Walk in during opening hours and somebody will take your items at the counter. Bring a valid photo ID, because New Jersey requires licensed dealers to record who they bought from, and that paperwork takes a few minutes on top of the evaluation itself.

Bring things as you found them. Tangled chains, boxes that have not been opened in years, envelopes of loose odds and ends from the back of a drawer. None of it needs repairing, polishing or pre-sorting, and none of it needs to be presentable. Nothing you bring in commits you to selling it, either. If the figure does not suit you, the whole lot goes home with you.

One thing worth saying plainly, since people do ask: we are not a pawnbroker. We do not lend money, we do not take anything as security against a loan, and there is no ticket to redeem later. We buy outright and we pay you the same day you agree, or you keep your things.
