How do you test and weigh my gold?
Purity is read with an XRF spectrometer, which fires low-energy X-rays at the piece and reads the signature the metal gives back. It reports the exact percentage of gold and of every other metal present, it takes about two minutes for a group, and it leaves nothing behind: no scratch, no acid mark, no filing. It also catches plated and gold-filled items instantly, which is why we would rather you brought the doubtful pieces than left them at home.
Purity is the lever on your payout, so the karat matters more than the size of the piece. A 14K item is 58.5 percent gold while an 18K item is 75 percent, which means two chains of identical weight can be worth very different amounts. You see those percentages on the readout yourself.

A stamp is a claim, not a guarantee. Under-karated pieces turn up regularly, and plenty of older, handmade or imported jewelry was never stamped at all, so an unmarked piece is not automatically worthless. That is the whole reason we test rather than read stamps. How is my offer calculated?
Every honest offer on scrap and jewelry starts from the same three inputs: how many grams you have, what percentage of that is actually gold, and what the live market is doing at that minute. Nothing else changes the melt figure. Here is the formula, with $S standing for the live spot price per troy ounce on the day you visit.
Worked example. Say you bring a 14K chain that weighs 18 grams.
- Pure gold content: 18 grams × 0.585 = 10.49 grams of gold.
- Convert to troy ounces: 10.49 ÷ 31.1035 = 0.3374 troy ounces.
- Multiply by the market: 0.3374 × $S = the chain's melt value at that moment.
Swap the purity decimal for any other karat: 10K uses 0.417, 18K uses 0.750, 22K uses 0.917, 24K uses 0.999. Note what happens if that same 18-gram chain were 10K instead: 18 × 0.417 gives 7.51 grams of gold, or 0.2413 troy ounces, well under half the 14K figure for identical weight. That is precisely why karats are separated and weighed one group at a time, and why letting anyone weigh a mixed pile in one go costs you money.
One troy ounce is 31.1035 grams, not the 28.35 grams of a kitchen ounce, and a pennyweight is about 1.555 grams. Ask which unit is on the scale, out loud, wherever you sell. Coins are the exception to pure melt math. A date, a mint mark or a grade can put a coin above its metal content, so coins are cross-referenced against collector demand before we quote and you are offered the higher of the two.
