Can you sell a lab grown diamond ring, and what does it bring?
You can, and the honest answer on value comes first. A lab grown diamond is chemically real diamond, but it is a manufactured product, and its resale market has kept falling as more are made. A lab grown stone bought at retail is jewelry to enjoy, not a store of value, so the offer on the stone follows its own market, not the price on the original receipt.
The ring is the part that holds its value. A 14K or 18K gold band, or a platinum setting, is precious metal no matter what stone sits in it, and it is priced against the live metal market on the day you visit. For many lab grown rings, the metal is the larger share of the offer.
How a lab grown diamond ring is priced at our counter
| Part of the ring | What we look at | How it is priced |
|---|---|---|
| Center stone | Confirmed as diamond, then natural or lab grown; size, color and clarity; any grading report | Against the lab grown resale market, stated separately |
| Side stones and pavé | Whether they are diamond and whether they are lab grown too | Priced with the center stone where they carry value |
| Gold band or setting | Karat stamp confirmed by XRF: 10K is 41.7% gold, 14K is 58.5%, 18K is 75% | By weight and purity against the live gold price |
| Platinum band or setting | PT950 or PLAT stamp confirmed by XRF | By weight and purity against the live platinum price |
You hear each part priced on its own, with the reasoning, before you decide anything.
How do I know if my diamond ring is lab grown?
Check the paperwork first. A grading report states whether the stone is natural or lab grown, and many lab grown stones also carry a tiny laser inscription on the girdle saying so, alongside a report number. The original receipt or ring box often says it too.
You cannot tell by eye, and home tests do not settle it: a lab grown diamond passes the same fog and heat checks as a natural one. At the counter, screening instruments separate natural from lab grown, and a diamond tester separates diamond from look-alikes such as moissanite and cubic zirconia. It takes minutes, it is free, and you watch it happen.
If you were told a ring was natural and our screening says lab grown, we show you the result and explain it. You are never asked to take a number on faith.
How to sell a lab grown diamond ring in one visit
- Bring the ring as it is. Leave the stone in its setting. We assess mounted stones at the counter, and loose stones are welcome too.
- Bring a valid photo ID. New Jersey requires it for every precious-metal sale.
- Bring any paperwork you have. A grading report, the receipt or the box helps confirm what the stone is.
- Watch the testing. Stone screened, metal XRF tested and weighed on a state-certified scale in front of you.
- Hear the offer in two parts. Stone and metal priced separately, with the reasoning stated.
- Decide. Accept and you leave with cash the same visit. Decline and the ring goes home with you, with no fee.

Find your nearest of our 8 storesSelling a lab grown diamond ring: questions sellers ask
Why is a lab grown diamond worth so little to resell?
Because more can always be made. As production scaled, wholesale levels for lab grown stones fell year after year, and resale sits at a small fraction of an equivalent natural stone. The retail price paid for a lab grown ring reflects the setting, the store and the brand far more than a resale market for the stone.
Is it worth selling a lab grown engagement ring?
Often yes, mainly for the metal. A gold or platinum band is paid by weight and purity against the live market whatever stone it holds, so a ring that sits in a drawer can still turn into real cash. The stone adds what its own market supports.
Should I take the lab grown stone out of the ring before selling?
No, leave it in the setting. Unmounting costs money and risks chipping the stone, and we handle any removal ourselves if the sale goes ahead. The stone is never weighed as gold: the metal is priced on its own weight.
Do I need a grading report to sell a lab grown diamond ring?
No. A report helps confirm the stone faster, but without one our screening at the counter establishes whether it is natural or lab grown, free and in front of you.
