A borough that left Livingston over a school
The village here was called Centerville until 1874, when it needed a post office and a name nobody would mix up with the other Centerville in Hunterdon County. In 1908 residents asked Livingston Township for a school of their own, were refused, and voted to become a separate borough instead. Roseland is still small, about 6,300 people on roughly three and a half square miles.
Two Roselands share those square miles. Along Eisenhower Parkway, near its I-280 interchange, stand the office buildings, including ADP's world headquarters, that fill with commuters on weekdays. Everywhere else, off Eagle Rock Avenue, Livingston Avenue and Harrison Avenue, it is a residential borough where families stay put and the same houses pass from parents to children.
