The Seabrook-Wilson House on Port Monmouth Road dates to the 1660s. Local tradition calls it the Spy House, after the story that its owner ran it as a tavern during the Revolutionary War and passed along what British soldiers said over their drinks. It now stands inside Bayshore Waterfront Park, beside the beach and the fishing pier that most residents think of first when they think of home.
Port Monmouth is a village of Middletown Township, about 3,700 people at the 2020 census. Compton Creek marks the Belford side, where the fishing boats tie up and the ferry to Manhattan leaves, and Pews Creek marks the western side toward North Middletown and Keansburg. The Henry Hudson Trail follows the old railroad bed across the village and carries on west toward Keyport and Aberdeen, roughly the direction of our store.
