Four villages that voted themselves a new name in 1992
Until 1992 this was Passaic Township, a name it had carried since 1866. Residents kept getting mistaken for the city of Passaic, more than 20 miles away, so a referendum was held and the change passed by just 80 votes, 1,901 to 1,821. The township had already given up land in 1922 to create Harding Township next door, which is why the two share a long boundary today.
The shape of the place comes from water and track. The Passaic River runs along the southern edge, and the far bank is Somerset County, with Warren and Bernards on the other side. NJ Transit's Gladstone Branch stops at Gillette, Stirling and Millington, so many households here set their day by the train. North of Meyersville the roads run out at the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge. Roughly 8,600 people live across the four villages, and most families have been in the same house a long time.
Watchung Hills class rings, commuter watches and the family chain
Long Hill teenagers go to Watchung Hills Regional High School across the river in Warren, and the class rings from those years are among the first things a Stirling or Millington seller sets down. Most are 10K, which is 41.7 percent gold, and some are 14K at 58.5 percent; each one is read on its own so the two never share a rate. Next come the pieces a commuter family builds up over decades: a steel-and-gold watch retired after the last ride into the city, wedding bands from a generation back, a herringbone chain that kinked and was never fixed.
Because families stay put, estates tend to arrive whole: a mother's jewelry box, a tin of old coins and a sterling set that only saw Thanksgiving. Every category is sorted before anything is priced. The coin buying page covers how a date or mint mark is checked before melt, and the silver buying page explains sterling at 92.5 percent against plate.
A first visit, in a customer's own words
“This was my first time coming into cash 4 gold trading post and it was a great experience. Ed was extremely helpful and made the whole transaction very easy. Would definitely recommend this place for anyone looking to sell gold or silver.”

A quick way to get a Long Hill jewelry box ready
Put anything stamped 10K, 14K, 18K, 750 or 585 in one pouch, and anything marked Sterling or 925 in another. Leave the unmarked pieces in a third; plenty of real gold carries no stamp at all, and the XRF analyzer settles it in seconds, backed by an acid test. Coins stay in their holders or envelopes. Nothing needs to be cleaned, and a polished coin is worth less than a dull one.
If a parent's house near the Great Swamp is being cleared, the estate buyers service can look at a full collection at home, and the New Jersey estate jewelry guide walks through executors and paperwork.
Over the Passaic on Stirling Road, then south to Middlesex
From Stirling or Millington, take Stirling Road across the Passaic River into Warren Township and keep heading south toward Middlesex, where the store sits at 748 Bound Brook Road. Most Long Hill sellers are at the counter in about 25 minutes. Parking is right out front.
Which Long Hill villages and neighbours do we hear from?
All four villages, from the streets around the Stirling and Millington stations to Homestead Park and the Meyersville roads that end at the refuge. Across the river, Warren and Basking Ridge sellers take the same route, and Berkeley Heights, Harding and Chatham Township are close behind.
What do Stirling, Gillette and Millington sellers bring?
Class rings, watches, chains and coins lead the list. Pick a category to read how it is judged.
What happens once a Long Hill seller walks in
Lay the pouches out and hand over your ID. Gold goes under the XRF analyzer piece by piece, sterling is split from plate, and coins and watches are pulled aside for a second look. Everything is weighed on a certified scale you can read yourself and priced at that day's live market, with any diamond or collector value named separately. Take the offer and you are paid on the spot; turn it down and nothing is charged.

How long does it take to drive from Long Hill Township to the Middlesex store?
About 25 minutes. Most sellers cross the Passaic River on Stirling Road into Warren Township and continue south to Middlesex, where the store is at 748 Bound Brook Rd. Phone (732) 629-7600.
Are Stirling, Gillette, Millington and Meyersville separate towns?
No. They are the four villages of Long Hill Township in Morris County, which was called Passaic Township until voters renamed it in 1992. Each village keeps its own name, train station or post office, but they share one municipal government.
Can I come in on a Saturday if I commute during the week?
Yes. Middlesex is open Monday through Friday from 10 to 6 and Saturday from 10 to 4, and closed Sunday. No appointment is needed; bring a valid government photo ID, which New Jersey requires for every precious-metals sale.
Is an old Watchung Hills class ring worth bringing in?
Usually. Class rings are most often 10K or 14K gold, and the heavy ones carry a fair amount of metal. The karat is read by XRF and the ring is weighed in front of you; a synthetic stone does not add value, but it does not stop the gold from being bought.
My father's coins have been in a tin for years. Should I clean them first?
No. Cleaning can wipe out collector value. Bring them as they are, still in any envelopes or holders, and each date and mint mark is checked for a premium before any coin is valued as silver or gold.
Do you also buy from Warren, Basking Ridge and Berkeley Heights?
Yes. Sellers from across the river in Warren and Bernards Township, and from Berkeley Heights, Harding and Chatham Township, come to the same Middlesex counter.
