Cash for Gold in Harrison, New Jersey

Cash 4 Gold Trading Post

Harrison fits into about a square mile of Hudson County between the Passaic River and Kearny, and for its size it holds an unusual mix: old-block families who have been on the same block for generations and new Riverbend District renters who ride the PATH every morning. Both end up with gold they no longer wear. Our counter for it is in Middlesex, west on I-280 and south on I-287.

Hearing an offer does not commit you to anything. You watch each item read and weighed, and whatever you decide to hold on to rides home with you.

West Hudson's factory town, rebuilt

From Edison's lamp works to the Riverbend towers

Harrison was a manufacturing town before it was anything else. Thomas Edison moved his light bulb production to the Edison Lamp Works here in the 1880s, and for most of the next century the riverfront was lined with plants, RCA's electron tube factory and Hyatt Roller Bearing among them. The workers lived in the two-family frame houses that still fill the grid off Harrison Avenue, and many of their grandchildren still do.

When the plants closed, the land along the river sat empty for years. It came back as the Riverbend District: mid-rise apartment buildings, the stadium the Red Bulls play in, and a rebuilt PATH station with a straight ride into Manhattan. The 2020 Census counted 19,450 residents, up more than 40 percent from 2010, and most of that growth is newcomers living within a few blocks of Frank E. Rodgers Boulevard.

Two kinds of Harrison seller

Old-block family gold and new-building first sales

The longtime households, Irish-American, Portuguese, and more recently Latin American, tend to bring a lifetime of pieces at once: wedding bands from two generations, a Harrison High class ring, communion crosses, a father's gold watch that stopped years ago, and a sterling set wrapped in cloth. Class rings are most often 10K at 41.7 percent gold or 14K at 58.5 percent. Portuguese family pieces are frequently 19.2 karat, marked 800, which is 80 percent, so every item is read on its own and never priced at a blended rate.

The Riverbend renters are usually first-time sellers with smaller bags: a chain that was a gift from someone no longer in the picture, a single hoop whose partner went down a drain, a graduation bracelet, silver necklaces that went out of style. Small pieces are still gold and silver by weight, and nobody behind the counter treats a short visit as a lesser one. The gold jewelry page explains how each karat is judged, and sterling at 92.5 percent is separated from plate before it touches the scale.

A first-time seller's take

“Don’t go anywhere else. I am so happy I came here. Ed was so knowledgeable, informative and kind. You won’t be disappointed.”

Before you leave the apartment

Three piles on the kitchen table

Look inside each band and clasp. Anything stamped 10K, 14K, 18K, 585, 750 or 800 goes in the first pile; anything marked 925 or Sterling goes in the second; and everything unmarked goes in the third, because plenty of real gold carries no stamp and the analyzer answers that in seconds. Keep a diamond ring's paperwork with the ring. Old coins stay in their sleeves, uncleaned.

If a parent's house on one of the side streets is being emptied and there is more than fits in a tote bag, the estate buyers service can come to the house, and the New Jersey estate jewelry guide covers what executors need.

I-280 west, I-287 south, then Route 28 into Middlesex

Harrison has its own on-ramps to I-280, which is the simplest way out: west through the Oranges and past Livingston to I-287, south on 287 to the Bound Brook exit for Route 28, then east on Route 28 until it turns into Bound Brook Road at the Middlesex line. The store is at 748. Plan on 40 to 45 minutes when the highways are moving. Riding PATH? Take it one stop to Newark Penn and change to a Raritan Valley Line train for Bound Brook or Dunellen.

Worth knowing first

Walk-ins only; there is nothing to book.

  • A photo ID is needed; New Jersey law requires the buyer to record it.
  • Saturday hours are 10 to 4, handy if you work in the city during the week.
  • On a Red Bulls match day, leave extra time getting onto I-280.
  • Bring every piece you are unsure of; testing it is free.

The New Jersey gold guide goes over the process in more detail.

Which parts of Harrison and West Hudson do we hear from?

The Riverbend District and the blocks around the PATH station and the stadium, the Harrison Avenue and Frank E. Rodgers Boulevard corridors, and the older residential streets in between. East Newark, the tiny borough on the north side, and Kearny beyond it take the same highways, and across the river the Ironbound is minutes away.

What do Harrison sellers bring to Middlesex?

Family gold from the old blocks and single pieces from the new buildings. Choose a category to read how it is valued.

A short visit

What the counter does with a Harrison bag

You hand over the three piles and your ID. Gold is read for fineness piece by piece, silver is checked for sterling or plate, and stones and dated coins are pulled aside to be priced on their own. The scale display faces you, the day's live market sets the metal value, and the offer is broken down so you can see where each number came from. Accept and you are paid right there; decline and there is no charge.

Harrison cash for gold: frequently asked questions

What is the fastest way from Harrison to the Middlesex store?

Take I-280 west to I-287, go south to the Route 28 exit at Bound Brook, then follow Route 28 east into Middlesex, where the store is at 748 Bound Brook Rd. Expect 40 to 45 minutes without heavy traffic. Phone (732) 629-7600.

Can I get there on PATH?

Partly. Ride PATH from Harrison to Newark Penn Station, then take NJ Transit's Raritan Valley Line to Bound Brook or Dunellen. The store sits on Route 28 between the two, a short ride from either station.

I only have one or two small pieces. Is it worth the trip?

Call first and describe them; that can save you a drive. Many Riverbend sellers bring a single chain or a couple of earrings, and small pieces are still bought on their gold or silver weight.

My grandmother's jewelry came from Portugal. How is it tested?

Each piece is read by XRF. Traditional Portuguese gold is often 19.2 karat, marked 800, meaning 80 percent gold, which is higher than American 14K at 58.5 percent, so it is paid at its own purity rather than averaged with other items.

When is the store open?

Monday through Friday from 10 to 6 and Saturday from 10 to 4; closed Sunday. No appointment is needed. Bring a valid government photo ID, which New Jersey requires for every precious-metals sale.

Do you also buy from East Newark and Kearny?

Yes. Sellers from East Newark, Kearny and the Ironbound across the river come to the same Middlesex counter by the same highways.
