A mill village on Spruce Run that renamed itself for the Gardner brothers
The settlement on Spruce Run was known as Eveland's Tavern in the 1700s, when the stream turned mills and the surrounding hills were worked for iron ore. The Central Railroad of New Jersey came up the valley in 1852. In 1863 five Gardner brothers moved their business here from New York City and built a factory making picture frames and perforated chair seats, which grew to employ some 700 workers. In 1871 the village took the name Glen Gardner in their honor, and in 1919 it became a borough of its own, carved from Lebanon and Bethlehem townships.
Some of that era is still standing. The iron Pony Pratt truss bridge that carries School Street over Spruce Run dates to 1870 and has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1977. Just outside town, Voorhees State Park shares the Glen Gardner mailing address, and Spruce Run Reservoir fills the valley downstream toward Clinton.
