Branchburg was carved out of Bridgewater Township in 1845 and named for the branches of the Raritan that meet along its edge. Dutch and English families were farming this ground before 1700, and old farmhouses still stand along Old York Road, the colonial route that crosses the township. The small villages of North Branch and Neshanic Station grew up where the roads met the water and, later, the railroad.
