The town was incorporated in 1885 as Ocean Beach, carved from Wall Township, was briefly renamed Elcho in the spring of 1889 and settled on Belmar, Italian for beautiful sea, a few weeks later. It became the Borough of Belmar in 1890. Today it has about 5,900 year-round residents along 1.3 miles of oceanfront, and its population swells every summer.
