What Is 14K Gold Worth Per Gram?

The short answer is that 14K gold is 58.3 percent pure gold, so every gram of a 14K piece is worth that share of whatever the live gold spot price happens to be that minute. The other roughly 41.7 percent is alloy metal that adds strength but no melt value. Bring your gold to any of our six New Jersey counters and we will weigh it, test it, and show you the math against live spot.

What determines the per-gram value of 14K gold

Three things set the number, and only three. The first is purity. The stamp 14K means fourteen parts gold out of twenty-four, which works out to 58.3 percent pure gold by weight. That fraction is fixed by the karat, so it never changes from one 14K ring to the next.

The second factor is the live gold spot price. Spot is the global market quote for one troy ounce of pure gold, and it moves every few seconds during market hours. A jeweler converts that ounce price down to a per-gram figure, then multiplies by the 58.3 percent purity to land on what a single gram of 14K metal is worth at that moment. Because spot is the engine, the value of your gram today can differ from its value last month even though the ring itself has not changed.

The third factor is weight. Value scales directly with how many grams sit on the scale, so a heavier chain is worth proportionally more than a thin one of the same karat. We weigh on a New Jersey state-certified scale and show you the gram reading before any figure is discussed.

Why the karat stamp matters so much

Higher karats hold more pure gold per gram, which is why an 18K piece, at 75 percent pure, carries more melt value per gram than a 14K piece, and a 10K piece, at 41.7 percent pure, carries less. Two chains can feel identical in the hand yet differ in value purely because of the number stamped inside the clasp. A faint or worn stamp is one reason we never rely on the marking alone.

Run the numbers yourself

Our gold calculator pulls the live spot price and lets you enter karat and weight to estimate value before you ever leave the house. It is a planning tool, and the certified weight we take at the counter is what the actual offer is built on, but it gives you a clear sense of the order of magnitude going in.

How we evaluate 14K gold at Cash 4 Gold Trading Post

Every piece starts with a free XRF spectrometer scan that you watch happen. XRF is non-destructive, takes about two minutes, and reads the true gold content without scratching, cutting, or applying acid to your jewelry. It confirms whether a 14K stamp is honest and catches plated or under-karat pieces that a stamp alone would hide.

Once purity is confirmed, the piece goes on our state-certified scale and the gram weight appears in front of you. We then apply the live spot price for pure gold to that weight at the verified purity. Nothing is rounded behind a curtain. If you accept, you walk out with same-day cash, and if you would rather keep the piece, you take it home with zero obligation. We do this across six locations in Middlesex and Monmouth counties, and the testing is always free whether you sell or not.

What to bring and where to go

No appointment is needed. Walk in during business hours Monday through Saturday with your 14K gold and a valid photo ID, which New Jersey requires for any precious-metal transaction. Bring everything, including broken chains, single earrings, and pieces you are not sure about, because metal value does not depend on whether an item is wearable. Our Manalapan store at 356 US-9 Unit 6 is the default contact location and the easiest starting point if you are deciding where to go. Call (732) 483-4145 with any question first.

Frequently asked questions about 14K gold value

Does the alloy in 14K gold have any value?

The base metals mixed into 14K, usually copper, silver, nickel, or zinc, give the gold its durability and color but carry almost no resale value compared to the gold itself. Value is built on the 58.3 percent that is pure gold, which is why the karat purity is the figure that matters most.

Why does the value of my 14K gold change day to day?

Because it tracks the live gold spot price, which moves continuously on the global market. Your ring is the same, but the market quote for pure gold rises and falls, so the per-gram value rises and falls with it.

Is white gold worth the same as yellow gold at the same karat?

Yes. White, yellow, and rose 14K are all 58.3 percent pure gold. The color comes from the alloy mix and any rhodium plating, not from the gold content, so they carry the same melt value per gram at a given weight.

Do you pay for the diamonds or stones set in a 14K piece?

We evaluate the metal and the stones separately. The 14K mount is valued on its gold content, and any diamonds or gemstones are assessed on their own merits, so a stone-set ring is looked at as two components rather than one.
