Selling Gold, Silver, and Coins in NJ: Your Questions Answered
Clear, plain-language answers to the questions Central New Jersey sellers ask most about gold, silver, platinum, diamonds, coins, and jewelry. Every answer covers how value is figured, what to bring, how testing works, and how you get paid the same day.
Pricing and Value
Precious-metal value comes down to purity and weight measured against the live spot market. Here is how each material is figured.
How do you calculate what my gold is worth?
Gold value is calculated from three things: the karat purity of the item, its exact weight, and the live gold spot price at the moment you visit. We weigh each piece on a state-certified scale and confirm the karat with a free XRF test you watch. Because the offer is tied to live spot, it moves with the market and we show every number before you decide.
What do 14K, 18K, and 22K actually mean?
The karat number is the proportion of pure gold in the metal. 14K is 58.3 percent pure gold, 18K is 75 percent pure, and 22K is 91.6 percent pure, with the rest made up of alloy metals for strength. Higher karat means more pure gold per gram, so purity is a major factor in value alongside weight and the live spot price.
How is silver and sterling valued?
Silver is valued by its purity and weight against the live silver spot price. Sterling silver, stamped 925 or sterling, is 92.5 percent pure silver, and pre-1965 United States coins are 90 percent silver. We confirm the content, weigh it on a certified scale, and base the offer on the live market the day you come in.
How are diamonds valued?
Diamonds are evaluated on the 4 Cs: carat weight, cut, color, and clarity. We also factor in the setting metal, since a diamond ring or pendant usually contains gold or platinum that carries its own value. Both the stone and the metal are assessed together so the full piece is accounted for.
How are coins valued, melt or collectible?
Coins are valued the higher of two ways: melt value or numismatic value. Melt value is the worth of the precious metal in the coin based on its purity, weight, and the live spot price. Numismatic value applies when a coin is rare or collectible and worth more than its metal, in which case it is priced against current collector demand.
Do you pay based on the live spot price?
Yes. Offers are tied to the live precious-metals spot market, which moves throughout each trading day, so the figure reflects the market at the moment you walk in. We show you the live spot price along with the weight and purity before any offer, so the math is transparent and nothing is hidden.
Why does my offer change from day to day?
Because the offer follows the live spot market, which rises and falls with global commodity trading every day. The same item can be worth more on one visit than another purely because spot moved. You can check the live gold or silver price online before you come in to get a sense of the market.
The Process
No appointment, no pressure, and no obligation. Most visits take only a few minutes.
Do I need an appointment?
No appointment is needed. We welcome walk-ins Monday through Saturday at all six locations. Just come in during business hours with your items and we will test and price them on the spot while you wait.
What do I need to bring?
Bring the items you want to sell and a valid government-issued photo ID. You do not need to clean, sort, or appraise anything beforehand. We handle the identification, testing, and pricing right at the counter.
How long does it take?
Most visits take only a few minutes. Each gold piece is tested in about two minutes with our XRF scanner, and weighing on the certified scale is immediate. Larger estate lots take a little longer, but you typically walk out with cash the same day.
How are my items tested?
Items are tested in front of you with a free XRF spectrometer, a non-destructive scanner that reads the exact metal purity in about two minutes without scratching or cutting the piece. Weight is then taken on a New Jersey state-certified scale. You watch every test and see the weight before any offer is made.
How am I paid?
You are paid the same day in cash once you accept an offer. There is nothing to mail, wait for, or follow up on. If you would rather not accept, you simply take your items home.
Is there any fee or obligation?
No. Testing and appraisal are completely free, and there is no obligation to sell. You can have your items evaluated, hear the offer, and walk away keeping everything if you choose. Nothing is charged either way.
What We Buy
What kinds of gold do you buy?
We buy gold in every form and karat, including 10K, 14K, 18K, 22K, and 24K. That covers rings, chains, bracelets, earrings, scrap gold, broken or tangled pieces, single earrings, and dental gold. Condition does not matter because the value is based on purity and weight.
Do you buy silver and platinum?
Yes. We buy silver in all forms, including sterling jewelry, 925-stamped pieces, silver coins, and sterling flatware. We also buy platinum jewelry and platinum settings. Each is valued by its purity and weight against the live spot market.
Do you buy diamonds, watches, and coins?
Yes. We buy loose diamonds and diamond jewelry, luxury watches such as Rolex, Omega, and Cartier, and coins and bullion of all kinds. Watches are evaluated on brand, movement, and condition, and coins are priced the higher of melt or collector value.
Do you buy estate lots and sterling flatware?
Yes. We regularly buy full estate lots, including mixed jewelry, coin collections, and complete sterling flatware sets. You do not need to sort or value anything first. Bring the whole lot and we price it together at the counter.
