Why our flagship sees so many estate collections

As the original Cash 4 Gold Trading Post store, the location at 494 Monmouth Rd Suite 5 has built up the longest reputation of any of our shops, and that reputation brings in a steady stream of inherited estate silver. Families who are settling an estate often arrive with more than they expected to find: a primary flatware service, a second everyday set, loose serving pieces collected over the years, and sometimes silver from more than one generation combined. Sitting near the Route 33 and 537 area, the store draws sellers from Freehold, Manalapan, Englishtown, Colts Neck, Monroe Township, Perrineville, Hightstown, Cranbury, and Jackson. Because we handle high volume here, we are used to working through large, mixed lots methodically rather than rushing.

Volume cuts both ways, though. We are just as comfortable with a single inherited spoon or a partial set as we are with a chest full of service for twelve. Everything is weighed and paid on the same terms, so there is no minimum and no need to assemble a complete set before visiting.

Sorting sterling from silver plate

With mixed estate lots, separating real silver from plate is the first job. Sterling pieces are stamped sterling or 925 on the back, reflecting the 92.5 percent pure silver that defines the alloy. Silver plate, on the other hand, is base metal or steel under a thin silver skin and carries little resale value despite often looking nearly identical. We settle the question with an XRF spectrometer that reads each piece's exact metal content in about two minutes. The test is free and leaves no mark, and if a lot turns out to be a mix of sterling and plate we will show you which pieces are which.

Turning weight into a same-day offer

Verified sterling is weighed on a state-certified scale in plain view, and your offer is calculated from that weight and the live silver spot price during your visit, never from a flat in-house rate. The larger collections common at this store add up: 500 grams of sterling holds about 462 grams of pure silver, and a full estate lot generally weighs considerably more, so at today's spot price the metal value of a sizable collection is substantial. Tarnish does not affect the offer, and partial sets are paid by weight just like complete services. When you accept, you leave with same-day cash.

Settling an estate is rarely simple, and we try to make the silver part of it the easy part. Executors and family members often arrive at the Monmouth Road counter with boxes that have not been opened in years, unsure whether they are looking at one set or several. We will lay everything out, run the XRF readings, separate sterling from plate, and put the qualifying pieces on the certified scale together so you see a single weight and a single number for the whole lot. There is no appointment required and no charge to find out what an inherited collection actually contains.
