Platinum is denser and more valuable per gram than gold. Many sellers do not realize their ring is platinum because it looks similar to white gold at a glance.

We identify platinum using our XRF spectrometer, which reads the exact composition of the alloy without damaging the piece. Platinum rings are usually stamped PT, PLAT, 950, or 900 inside the band. If the stamp has worn away over decades of wear, the XRF test confirms the metal type definitively. Platinum settings are worth roughly twice as much per gram as 14K gold settings, so correctly identifying the metal makes a significant difference in your offer.

Gold settings: karat matters

Gold diamond ring settings come in several karat grades, and the karat directly determines the metal's value. Here is how the common grades compare:

10K gold contains 41.7 percent pure gold. It is the minimum karat that can legally be sold as gold in the United States. 10K settings are durable but carry the lowest gold value per gram.

14K gold contains 58.3 percent pure gold. This is the most common karat for American engagement rings and wedding bands. A 14K setting weighing 5 grams contains about 2.9 grams of pure gold.

18K gold contains 75 percent pure gold. European and high-end American rings often use 18K. The same 5-gram setting in 18K contains 3.75 grams of pure gold, roughly 30 percent more than a 14K piece of the same weight.

22K and 24K gold are rare in diamond ring settings because the metal is too soft to hold stones securely. If your ring tests at these karats, it may be a cultural or regional design.

White gold, yellow gold, and rose gold of the same karat have essentially the same gold content and value. The color differences come from the alloying metals (nickel or palladium for white, copper for rose), which do not significantly affect the price.

Palladium: the overlooked precious metal

Some rings from the 2000s and 2010s were made with palladium settings as a less expensive alternative to platinum. Palladium looks similar to platinum and is also a precious metal with real market value. We test for palladium with the same XRF analyzer and price it based on the current spot rate. Sellers with palladium rings often have no idea the metal is a precious commodity because jewelers marketed it as a budget option.

How setting weight adds up

A solitaire engagement ring setting might weigh 3 to 5 grams. A halo setting with pave accents can weigh 5 to 8 grams because of the additional metalwork. A wide wedding band might be 6 to 10 grams. When you multiply those weights by the current per-gram price of the metal, the numbers are meaningful.

For example, a 6-gram 18K white gold halo setting contains 4.5 grams of pure gold. At a gold price of $2,000 per troy ounce (about $64 per gram), that setting contains roughly $288 in gold value before any buyer margin. Add the diamond value on top, and the total offer reflects the complete picture of what the ring is worth.

The diamond gets its own evaluation

While the metal value is often underestimated, the diamond remains important. We grade each stone using the 4Cs: carat weight, cut, color, and clarity. Larger, well-cut diamonds with good color and clarity grades drive the diamond portion of the offer. Smaller accent diamonds in halo and pave settings are evaluated as a group based on total carat weight.
