Are blue diamonds real diamonds?
They are. A natural blue diamond is chemically the same material as any other diamond, pure carbon, and it is graded on the same clarity and cut standards. What makes it blue is boron trapped in the crystal as it formed, which absorbs light at the red end of the spectrum and leaves the blue you see. Stones coloured this way belong to a group gemologists call type IIb, and they are genuinely scarce: the vast majority of diamonds ever mined contain no boron at all.
The confusion in the question comes from the fact that most blue stones on the market did not get their colour that way. A colourless or poorly coloured natural diamond can be turned blue in a laboratory, and a lab-grown diamond can be made blue from the start. Both are still diamond in every physical sense. Neither is rare. So the honest answer to "is this blue diamond real" is usually two answers: yes it is a real diamond, and here is where its colour came from.
Real blue diamonds, treated blue diamonds and lab-grown: telling them apart
You cannot tell them apart by eye, and neither can most jewellers without equipment. That is not a failure of skill, it is the point of the treatments. What separates them is testing and paperwork, and the differences that matter are these.
Natural blue. Coloured by boron during formation, deep in the earth. Because boron conducts electricity, these stones behave as semiconductors, which is one of the properties a laboratory uses to identify them. Colour is usually uneven under magnification and often carries a grey or green cast. This is the category that carries real rarity.
Treated blue. A natural diamond that started colourless, off-white or brownish and was irradiated, often followed by controlled heating, to produce blue. The colour is permanent and stable in normal wear. Its value sits close to what the same stone was worth before the treatment, because nothing rare was added.
Lab-grown blue. A diamond grown in a machine over weeks, with boron introduced deliberately so it comes out blue. Physically identical to natural, and priced as a manufactured product.
Irradiated blue diamonds: what the treatment actually does
Irradiation knocks atoms out of position in the crystal lattice, creating defects that absorb light differently and shift the stone's apparent colour toward blue or blue-green. Reputable treatment is done in a controlled setting and the result is safe to wear and does not fade. The stone is still a real diamond, and a laboratory can detect the treatment, which is why irradiated blue diamonds are always disclosed on a proper report. Anyone selling a blue stone as natural without a report identifying its origin is asking you to take the most expensive part of the claim on trust.
Dark blue diamonds and the fancy colour grades
Colourless diamonds are graded on a letter scale for the absence of colour. Coloured diamonds are graded the opposite way, on how much colour is present, and the scale runs Faint, Very Light, Light, Fancy Light, Fancy, Fancy Intense, Fancy Vivid, Fancy Deep and Fancy Dark. A grader is describing three things at once: the hue, meaning the colour itself; the tone, meaning how light or dark it is; and the saturation, meaning how strong it is.
This is where the phrase dark blue diamonds needs care, because dark is not a compliment on this scale, it is a description. Fancy Deep and Fancy Dark stones hold a lot of colour but can read as almost black in poor light. Pure blue is rare enough that most natural stones are graded with a modifier, such as greyish blue or greenish blue, and a stone described simply as blue with no modifier is unusual. People also search blue colour diamond and blue color diamond interchangeably, and both mean the same thing here.
Fancy intense blue diamond: where it sits on the scale
Fancy Intense sits near the strong end, above Fancy and below Fancy Vivid. In practice it describes a stone whose blue is unmistakable and saturated without tipping into darkness. Among natural blues it is a genuinely desirable grade, because it carries obvious colour while keeping the brightness that deep and dark stones start to lose. The grade alone does not settle value, though. A Fancy Intense blue that was irradiated is a different object entirely from a Fancy Intense blue that came out of the ground that way, and only the report tells you which one is in your hand.
GIA certified blue diamonds: what the report actually tells you
For a coloured diamond, the origin of the colour is the headline on the report, not a footnote. A laboratory report on a blue stone will say whether the colour is natural, whether it is the result of treatment, and whether the diamond itself was grown rather than mined. Those three statements are what separate stones that look identical on the hand.
Read the report for the colour origin line first, then the colour grade, then the carat weight, clarity and measurements. If a stone is described in a listing as a GIA certified blue diamond but the report is not shown, treat the phrase as marketing until you see the document, because certification is not a synonym for natural. A report that says treated is doing its job correctly and honestly.

Rare blue diamonds: why natural blue is so unusual
Blue needs boron, and boron is largely a surface element. For it to end up locked inside a diamond, the raw material had to be carried far deeper than usual and the crystal had to form in its presence, a combination that almost never lines up. That is why natural blues turn up in a handful of deposits worldwide rather than everywhere diamonds are found, and why most that do appear are small or lightly coloured.
The best known example is the Hope Diamond, a Fancy Dark greyish blue stone of just over 45 carats now held by the Smithsonian. It has a party trick that says something real about the chemistry: put it under ultraviolet light and it glows red afterwards, a phosphorescence typical of boron-bearing diamonds. Blue diamond meaning
Blue has long been associated with calm, constancy and trust, and a blue diamond in an engagement or anniversary ring is usually chosen to say something along those lines rather than for investment. It also carries the practical charm of being the something blue in a wedding without needing anything extra. None of that changes what the stone is worth, and it is worth being clear about the two things separately: meaning is why people choose a blue stone, and colour origin is what decides its value when it changes hands.
What a blue diamond is worth when you sell it
Origin first, then grade, then the usual carat, clarity and cut. A natural blue of real saturation is in a different league from anything treated or grown, and the difference is not a small premium, it is the whole reason the category exists. A treated blue is valued much as the underlying diamond would be without its colour, and a lab-grown blue is valued as a manufactured stone. Setting metal counts too: a platinum or gold mount carries its own value underneath the stone whatever the stone turns out to be.
