Silver coins are one of the most common things people bring into our stores. Maybe you found a bag of old quarters in your dad's closet. Maybe you inherited a collection of Morgan dollars. Maybe you've been stacking silver for years and you're ready to cash out.
Whatever the situation, here's how selling silver coins works in New Jersey, what types of silver coins we buy, and what kind of prices to expect.
Types of silver coins we buy
Cash 4 Gold Trading Post buys every type of silver coin at all six of our New Jersey locations. Here's what we see most often:
Morgan dollars (1878-1921)
The big silver dollars that everyone's grandfather seemed to collect. Morgan dollars are 90% silver and weigh 26.73 grams each. That puts the silver content at about 0.7734 troy ounces per coin.
Common-date Morgans in average circulated condition trade at a modest premium over their silver melt value. Key dates are a different story. An 1889-CC or 1893-S Morgan can be worth hundreds or thousands of dollars regardless of silver prices. We check every single Morgan dollar for key dates and mint marks before making an offer.
Peace dollars (1921-1935)
Same size and silver content as Morgan dollars (90% silver, 26.73 grams). Peace dollars generally carry smaller collector premiums than Morgans, with most common dates trading near or slightly above melt value. A few key dates like the 1928 Philadelphia mint are worth significantly more.
Walking Liberty half dollars (1916-1947)
One of the most beautiful coin designs ever minted. Walking Liberty halves are 90% silver and weigh 12.5 grams, containing about 0.3617 troy ounces of silver each. Most circulated examples trade near melt value, but early dates and mint-marked coins from the 1910s and 1920s command collector premiums.
Pre-1965 junk silver (dimes, quarters, half dollars)
Before 1965, U.S. dimes, quarters, and half dollars were made with 90% silver. After 1964, the Mint switched to copper-nickel clad. These older coins are called "junk silver" because collectors don't want them for rarity, but the silver content makes them valuable.
Quick reference for 90% silver coin values:
- Dimes (Roosevelt, Mercury): 2.5 grams each, about 0.0723 troy oz silver
- Quarters (Washington): 6.25 grams each, about 0.1808 troy oz silver
- Half dollars (Franklin, Walking Liberty, Kennedy 1964): 12.5 grams each, about 0.3617 troy oz silver
We buy junk silver in any quantity. A handful of old quarters or buckets of mixed coins, it doesn't matter.
American Silver Eagles (1986-present)
The modern U.S. bullion coin. Each contains exactly 1 troy ounce of .999 fine silver. Silver Eagles trade at a predictable premium above spot price and are easy to value. We buy these all day long.
40% silver Kennedy half dollars (1965-1970)
Kennedy halves from 1965 through 1970 contain 40% silver instead of 90%. They're worth less per coin than pre-1965 halves but still have real silver value. We buy these too.
Foreign silver coins
Canadian silver dollars, Mexican silver pesos, British silver coins, and other world silver. If it's silver, we buy it.
How silver coins are priced
Silver coin pricing comes down to two factors: metal content and collector demand.
For most common silver coins, the price tracks closely with the silver spot price. A bag of junk silver quarters in average condition will sell for a percentage of melt value. There's no mystery to it.
For coins with collector value, the pricing involves looking at the date, mint mark, condition, and current market demand. We use industry-standard references and real market data to price numismatic coins. If a coin is worth more as a collectible than as melt, we pay the higher amount.
At Cash 4 Gold Trading Post, we test every coin and check every date. Our XRF analyzers confirm silver content, and our buyers know which coins carry premiums. You'll never get a blanket "melt price" on a collection that contains valuable individual coins.

Frequently asked questions about selling silver coins
Where can I sell silver coins in NJ?
Cash 4 Gold Trading Post buys silver coins at six locations across Central New Jersey. We buy Morgan dollars, Peace dollars, Walking Liberty halves, junk silver, American Silver Eagles, and all other silver coins and bullion. Walk in any day Monday through Saturday for a free appraisal and same-day cash payment.
Do you buy junk silver?
Yes. We buy pre-1965 U.S. dimes, quarters, and half dollars containing 90% silver in any quantity. We also buy 40% silver Kennedy half dollars from 1965-1970. Pricing is based on the current silver spot price and the total silver weight of your coins.
What's a fair price for silver coins?
A fair price for common silver coins is typically 85% to 95% of their calculated melt value, depending on the type and quantity. Coins with collector value (key dates, high grades) should sell above melt. Cash 4 Gold Trading Post checks every coin individually and pays collector premiums where applicable.
How do I know if my silver coins are valuable?
The date, mint mark, and condition determine whether a silver coin has collector value above its melt value. Key-date Morgan dollars, early Walking Liberty halves, and error coins can be worth significantly more than their silver content. Bring your coins to Cash 4 Gold Trading Post and we'll identify any premium coins in your collection for free.
Should I sell my silver coins now?
Silver prices fluctuate daily. If you have silver coins you're not collecting or investing with, selling when prices are at strong levels makes sense. Cash 4 Gold Trading Post pays based on the live silver spot price, so your payout reflects the current market.
