Finding a trustworthy coin shop in New Jersey can be tricky. There are plenty of places that will buy your coins, but not all of them know what they're looking at. The difference between a dealer who understands numismatics and one who just weighs everything for melt can cost you hundreds of dollars.
This guide covers what coin shops actually do, how coins are valued, and where to find a full-service coin dealer in Central New Jersey.
What coin shops buy (and sell)
A real coin shop handles both sides of the market. They buy coins from people who want cash, and they sell coins to collectors and investors. That distinction matters because a dealer who actively sells coins has a reason to pay you fair market value. They need inventory.
Here's what a full-service NJ coin shop typically deals in:
Gold coins — American Gold Eagles, Canadian Maple Leafs, South African Krugerrands, pre-1933 U.S. gold coins ($5, $10, $20 denominations), and gold bullion of all sizes.
Silver coins — American Silver Eagles, Morgan dollars, Peace dollars, Walking Liberty half dollars, Mercury dimes, Roosevelt dimes (pre-1965), Washington quarters (pre-1965), Franklin and Kennedy half dollars (pre-1970).
Junk silver — Pre-1965 U.S. coins that contain 90% silver. Called "junk" because the value comes entirely from the silver content, not collector appeal. Bags, rolls, and loose coins.
Bullion bars and rounds — Gold bars from 1 gram to 1 kilogram. Silver bars from 1 ounce to 100 ounces. Private mint rounds. Government-issued bars.
Rare and collectible coins — Key-date coins, proof sets, mint sets, graded coins in PCGS or NGC holders, error coins, and complete collections.
Foreign coins — Sovereigns, Francs, Pesos, and other world gold and silver coins.
How coins are valued at a coin shop
Every coin that comes through the door gets evaluated on two dimensions: metal content and collector premium.
Metal value (melt value) is the simplest calculation. You take the coin's weight, multiply by its purity, and multiply by the current spot price of the metal. A 1-ounce American Silver Eagle at $30 spot is worth $30 in silver content. A 1/4 ounce American Gold Eagle at $3,000 spot contains $750 worth of gold.
Collector value (numismatic premium) is where things get interesting. Some coins trade well above their metal value because of rarity, condition, or historical significance. An 1893-S Morgan dollar might contain $25 worth of silver but sell for $5,000+ because of how few were minted. A common-date Morgan in average condition might sell for $35, just a small premium over melt.
Most coins people bring into a coin shop fall into the metal-value category. That's fine. The pricing is straightforward and you'll know exactly what you're getting.
But some people walk in with collections that include key dates and rare pieces they don't even know about. That's why it matters where you sell. A dealer who only weighs coins for melt will miss the $500 coin mixed in with the $25 ones.
At Cash 4 Gold Trading Post, we check every coin individually. Our staff knows which dates and mint marks carry premiums, and we price accordingly. If a coin is worth more as a collectible than as melt, we pay the higher amount.
Why Cash 4 Gold Trading Post is a full-service coin shop
We're not just a "we buy gold" store. We are active coin dealers. We buy coins, we sell coins, and we maintain inventory for collectors and investors across Central New Jersey.
Here's what sets us apart from other NJ coin shops:
XRF testing on every piece. Our X-ray fluorescence analyzers verify metal content with precision. No guesswork, no acid tests that damage your coins.
Numismatic knowledge. Our buyers are trained to identify key dates, mint marks, varieties, and errors. We don't just melt everything.
We buy AND sell. Because we maintain retail inventory, we can often pay more for coins than a pure scrap buyer. Coins we can resell to collectors are worth more to us than melt value alone.
Same-day cash. No waiting for checks to clear. No wire transfers. Cash in your hand when you walk out.
Licensed NJ dealer. We're a licensed precious metals dealer in the state of New Jersey. That means we follow state regulations on record-keeping, identification, and holding periods.
500,000+ customers served. We've been doing this long enough that our reputation speaks for itself.

Tips for selling coins at a coin shop
Don't clean your coins. This is the number one mistake people make. Cleaning a coin removes its original surface and can cut the value in half. Even if a coin looks dirty or tarnished, leave it alone. Dealers prefer original surfaces.
Bring everything. Don't pre-sort and leave things at home that you think are worthless. We've found valuable coins mixed into jars of pennies. Let the dealer do the sorting.
Bring any documentation. If you have receipts, certificates of authenticity, or grading slips, bring them. They speed up the process and can verify authenticity for higher-value pieces.
Know the basics. You don't need to be an expert, but knowing the current spot prices of gold and silver helps you evaluate the offer you receive. Check prices online before you visit.
Ask questions. A good coin dealer will explain how they arrived at their offer. If someone just gives you a number with no explanation, that's a red flag.
Frequently asked questions about coin shops in NJ
Where can I sell gold coins in NJ?
Cash 4 Gold Trading Post buys gold coins at all six of our Central New Jersey locations: East Brunswick, New Brunswick, Middlesex, Millstone, Brick, and Manalapan. We buy American Gold Eagles, Krugerrands, Maple Leafs, pre-1933 U.S. gold coins, and all other gold coins and bullion. Walk in any day Monday through Saturday.
What's the best coin shop in central New Jersey?
Cash 4 Gold Trading Post operates six coin shop locations across Central NJ and has served over 500,000 customers. We use XRF testing for accurate metal analysis, our buyers are trained in numismatics to identify rare coins, and we pay cash the same day. We both buy and sell coins, which means we maintain fair pricing on both sides of the transaction.
Do coin shops pay spot price?
No coin shop pays full spot price. The dealer needs a margin to cover operating costs and profit. That said, the best coin shops pay close to spot for bullion items like American Eagles and common-date coins. At Cash 4 Gold Trading Post, we price transparently based on the current spot price and will show you exactly how we calculated your offer.
What coins are worth the most money?
Key-date Morgan dollars (like the 1893-S), pre-1933 U.S. gold coins in high grades, rare mint-mark varieties, and error coins tend to carry the highest premiums. For bullion, American Gold Eagles, Gold Buffalos, and 1-ounce gold bars hold strong resale value. Bring your coins to Cash 4 Gold Trading Post for a free evaluation.
Do you buy junk silver?
Yes. We buy pre-1965 U.S. dimes, quarters, and half dollars (90% silver content) in any quantity. Whether it's a handful of old quarters or bags of mixed silver coins, we pay based on the current silver spot price. All six of our New Jersey locations buy junk silver every day.
