Why the name matters

Why is luxurious jewellery (or luxury jewelry) worth more than melt?

Because the resale market wants the piece intact. A Cartier LOVE bracelet, the 1969 Aldo Cipullo design that locks onto the wrist with its own screwdriver, sells to the next owner as a LOVE bracelet, not as a weight of 18K gold. The same is true of a Van Cleef & Arpels Alhambra pendant, a Tiffany & Co. signed piece, or a David Yurman cable bracelet: collectors and resale buyers pay for the design, the signature and the story, so a buyer who prices only the metal is ignoring most of the value.

That is the difference between a scrap quote and a designer quote. At our counters a signed piece is checked for its brand value first, and the offer is built on what the intact piece brings on the resale market, with the live melt value underneath it as the floor. Melt is where the arithmetic starts on a designer piece, never where it ends.

What drives the value of each designer brand?

Every house earns its premium a different way. The table below is what our counters actually look for beyond the karat stamp:

Van Cleef & Arpels	Alhambra clover pieces carry some of the strongest brand premiums in jewelry. Stone inlays such as mother of pearl and onyx are part of the value, not a deduction.

Two honest notes from that table. First, an Hermes enamel or Clic H bangle has brand value but little or no metal value, and we will tell you that plainly at the counter rather than weigh it theatrically. Second, David Yurman's sterling-and-gold construction means a heavy cable bracelet earns three ways: the silver, the gold, and the signature.

Why is the blue Tiffany color famous, and does a Tiffany co engagement ring or proposal ring resell?

That robin's-egg color has been Tiffany's trademark since 1845, and the box alone signals the brand so strongly that resale buyers pay attention to it. A Tiffany engagement or proposal ring resells on three things: the certified stone, the platinum or gold mounting, and the signature, and keeping the box and papers helps the number.

Does affordable or high end luxury jewelry hold any resale value?

Signed silver from the big houses, think Tiffany sterling or entry Yurman cable, is the affordable end of luxury jewelry and it still resells above plain silver because the signature travels with it. It will not touch gold-piece numbers, but it is worth bringing in rather than assuming it is costume.

Buccellati, VCA and the houses collectors hunt

Two names come up constantly in estate lots and appraisals. Buccellati is the Milanese house famous for textured gold engraving, surfaces worked by hand until they read like woven fabric, and that engraving is unmistakable to a trained eye. VCA is simply the trade shorthand for Van Cleef & Arpels, the house behind the Alhambra clover. Both resell far above melt when genuine, which is why every signed piece gets the brand check before anyone talks about weight.

Real or replica

How do you know my designer piece is real?

Hallmarks, signatures and serials. Genuine Cartier pieces carry a serial number alongside the maker's mark and metal stamp, and the engraving quality itself is a tell: crisp, even and correctly placed on the real thing. It sits on the shortlist of fine jewellery brands, with Buccellati, Van Cleef & Arpels and Cartier, whose signature alone justifies a specialist look before anyone weighs anything.

Retired Pandora necklaces and charms

Retired Pandora pieces are collected, and a discontinued charm or necklace can bring more than the current catalog equivalent, but the numbers stay modest because most Pandora is sterling silver. We weigh the silver, credit the brand where the secondary market supports it, and are straight with you when melt is the honest ceiling.

Stamps and practicalities

Jewellery stamped 925, 750 or 585, and 14K hallmarks and markings

The three-digit stamps are fineness marks in parts per thousand: jewellery stamped 925 is sterling silver, a 750 stamp is 18 karat gold, and 585 is 14 karat. The American convention writes the same purity as karat, so 14K hallmarks and markings mean exactly what a 585 stamp means. A stamp is a claim, not proof, which is why every piece at our counters gets the XRF reading that confirms or corrects it in front of you, free, before the stamp is priced.
