Certified Stones and Designer Pieces

If your diamond came with a GIA certificate, bring it. A grading report from GIA, AGS, or another reputable lab gives us verified information about your stone's cut, clarity, color, and carat weight. This speeds up the process and often means a higher offer because there is less uncertainty in the evaluation.

We also recognize the added value of designer settings. A Cartier engagement ring or a David Yurman diamond piece is worth more than its raw materials. Not every buyer accounts for that. We do. If your jewelry carries a recognized brand name, tell us when you bring it in.

The Selling Process for Larger Stones

Diamonds over one carat require more careful evaluation than smaller accent stones. The price per carat increases significantly at certain weight thresholds, and small differences in clarity or color can mean hundreds or thousands of dollars. We take our time with these pieces.

For stones over 2 carats, we may spend 30 minutes or more on the evaluation. This is your money, and rushing the process would not serve you well. We check the stone from every angle under magnification, assess the cut proportions, look for any treatments or enhancements, and compare against current Rapaport pricing.

The difference between natural and lab-grown diamonds matters for resale. Both are real diamonds with the same chemical composition, hardness, and optical properties. But the market treats them very differently on the secondary market.

Natural diamonds hold their value better over time. A well-graded natural stone purchased five years ago is likely worth a comparable amount today, sometimes more depending on size and quality. The supply of natural diamonds is limited, which supports pricing.

Lab-grown diamonds have dropped in price as production has scaled up. A lab diamond purchased in 2022 may be worth significantly less now at resale. This does not mean it is worthless. We still buy lab-grown stones and will give you an honest number based on current market conditions.

How to tell the difference? Most lab diamonds are laser-inscribed on the girdle with a certificate number. If you have the original receipt or certificate, that helps. Our diamond tester can also distinguish between the two in most cases.
